Paintings for H20Project
These paintings are for the H2OProject right here in Winona, MN. It's a ministry at a local church where they are raising funds to bring water(H2O) to those who need it in other countries.
I chose portraits for these paintings because whenever I think of those in need in other parts of the globe, I always think about humanity. And how we're all in this together. You know? Are these portraits of someone who needs your help? Or are they portraits of someone providing help? Or are they of you?

"Invasion"
14" x 19"
Acrylic on Hardboard Panel
Earlier this week I really wanted to begin this painting, but had run out of some essential colors in my oil paint stash(because I forgot to order more). And being very impatient by nature I rummaged around and found a few tubes of acrylic paint...it has been about a year since I switched over from acrylic to oil paint. And it took that mixture of forgetfulness and impulsiveness that led to this painting being done in acrylic paint rather than oil paint.
Acrylic on Hardboard Panel
Why does this matter? Well...I think it took that year of misguided oil painting to realize that these fabricated realism paintings really need to be done in acrylic. Oil paint is meant to be mixed and blended and messy(if you ask me) and these paintings are meant to be crisp and clean...so bring on the acrylic.

This painting is not to be mistaken(of course) for the Dr. Seuss tale featuring the "pants with nobody inside them."

"Transportation Booth"
20" x 20"
Oil on Hardboard
I tried a new technique with this painting. I normally prepare my painting surface with a nice white coat of primer, but this time I started with a surface painted black. It's been something I'd wanted to try for ages, but hadn't gotten around to it. A few artist's I follow have said they prime their canvas's black and really enjoy how the colors jump off the canvas. I agree! The color seems to be starker/brighter to me.

"Only white! It will take away your color if you paint it black!" he said. Oh well. I like it.

"Meeting Adjourned"
14" x 20"
Oil on Hardboard
Have you ever been in one of those meetings? You know the one where you're sitting in a lawn chair, surrounded by nothingness(or at least it feels that way) and your boss is actually a Boeing 747... yeah, I know, get out quick.
